Why Tromsø

Bubbles 2017 School will be held at Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate (CAGE), Department of Geosciences, UiT – Norges Arktiske Universitet, Tromsø, Norway.

Tromsø is the northernmost large city in the world (300 km north of the Arctic Circle) with population of over 70,000 people. Despite its remoteness, Tromsø hosts one of the eight largest universities in Norway with 12,000 students as well as numerous research institutions with a broad recognition in the world. Since 2014, Tromsø and UiT host national Centre of Excellence for Arctic gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate – CAGE, which has earned a status of one of the world leaders in gas hydrate research. Owing its location in the fjords of north Atlantic Ocean and a well-developed infrastructure, Tromsø has become a major gateway to the Arctic Ocean for international scientific community.

Tromsø occupies an island called Tromsøya, a part of Kvaloya Island on the West and some areas on the Norwegian mainland (Tromsdalen area) on the East. UiT campus, Airport, city center and most of the touristic destinations locate on Tromsøya. Students will be accommodated at the Tromsø Camping in Tromsdalen, which is within walking distance (30 min) from the city center across the bridge and also has city bus connections. Tromsø Camping offers cozy cabins for 4 people (two bedrooms in each) with a living room and a kitchen.
